Mosquitoes: Facts, Identification & Control

How to Identify Mosquitoes

How to identify Mosquito
Mosquitoes are one of the most-common summer pests. They range in size from 3 to 9 mm. Their bodies and wings are covered in tiny scales. They have long, thin legs and long nose, which females use to draw blood. Mosquitoes have narrow and oval body. There are more than 150 species of mosquitoes in North America, the most common being the Asian tiger mosquito. Mosquitoes range in color from pale brown to black, gray, silver and green with whitish stripes across abdomen or with iridescent blue scales. They are easily recognizable from the buzzing sound they make while approaching humans.

Mosquitoes Eating and Feeding Habits

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water including ponds, marshes, flood waters, drains, even water in old tires and in tree holes. They also breed in soft soil. Mosquitoes, only female ones, search for food, i.e. blood by detecting body heat and carbon dioxide exhaled by humans. Male mosquitoes feed on plant nectar. Usually, mosquitoes bite at dawn and dusk and during the night. However, Asian tiger mosquito bites during the day too. Most mosquitoes are not active in the sunshine because they may die. The rapid beating of mosquito wings creates a buzzing sound that we can hear when they are near us.

Threats

Mosquitoes are vectors of serious diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis and West Nile virus. Mosquito bites can cause mild irritation to intense inflammation and swelling.
