How to Identify Ants
Ants range in size from one-sixteenth of an inch to one-fourth of an inch long. There are many species of ants all over the United States. The most common species in the North Carolina area include odorous ants, black ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, etc. Ants vary in color from red to brown and black. Immature ants are usually white in color and resemble fly maggots. Like all other insects, ants have three body divisions: head, thorax, and abdomen. The thorax and abdomen are joined by one or two nodes, which form the petiole. Some people mistake ants for termites. There are some features that distinguish between the two, like the presence of constricted/pinched waist in ants, while in termites this is absent; ants’ forewings are larger than hind wings, whereas termites have all four in equal size; ants have bent/elbowed antennae, while termites have straight. Ants are commonly found in the warmer months, from mid-June to late September.
Ants Eating and Feeding Habits
Ants feed on sweets; they are especially fond of honeydew. They also feed on live or dead insects. They live in colonies and can be found almost anywhere – in lawns, walls, backyards, stumps, under foundations, inside structures, etc. They can enter even the tiniest of cracks, searching for sugary foods, bread, greasy foods, meats or water. Ants are usually not aggressive unless disturbed or alarmed. They are quick to bite and emit a repulsive odor.
Although ants do not pose serious health risks, they can contaminate food. Their bites cause redness, swelling, and itching and can lead to infection or serious problems if not treated timely.
Bitten by an ant? Wash the affected area with mild soap and water and sterilize it with hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or betadine. Keep the bite clean regularly and apply an antiseptic cream. A paste of baking soda and water can be applied too to ease off the itchiness.

Two visits over four months from a major nation exterminator made no impact in the mouse/rat problem we had. One visit from Crown and the only mouse we’ve seen or heard since dropped dead in the middle of the floor. Fast, courteous, knowledgeable and efficient.Anonymous
